Launched for the new school year in 2008/2009, The Beats is an exciting addition to the schools work of N-Gage. Using state of the art laptops and software, young people work in teams to produce a CD which is sold in school to raise money for charities working with street children in Uganda.

N-Gage Director Christie Spurling remembers the first CD sale of the year:

"Just before we were due to start selling the pupils seemed very nervous and quite reluctant to set the stall up. Some were worried about how their peers may react to what they were doing and others seemed to lack confidence. As the walked down the corridor they were all walking, either alone or in pairs looking very apprehensive. After they had raised a staggering £130 they were all congratulating each other and walked along the corridor as a unified group. It was fascinating to watch and just showed how a seemingly simple task can draw people together for a shared goal."

The award was presented by BBC Northwest Tonight star, Gordon Burns and staff from event sponsor Parkway Green Housing Trust at a glittering ceremony in the splendid surroundings of Manchester Town Hall.
