The Step Up Course has been specially written by N-Gage Director Christie Spurling and is designed to enable young people to reach their full potential, develop new skills and grow in confidence.
"Christie is uniquely placed to reach young people in a way that more conventional and traditional methods seem unable to do. He provides an inspiring example of the way a young man can turn his life around and go on to make such a positive contribution to the benefit of the community at large, and in the lives of many young people in particular."
Peter Fahy, Chief Constable, Greater Manchester Police.
It gives them the chance to work through any issues they may have which are affecting their performance at school, and reflect on the wider of their behaviour.
The primary aim of Step up is to support the education system by working with those young people who are experiencing difficulties in the following ways:
- To establish meaningful and trusting relationships with young people experiencing difficulty at school
- To identify key reasons why the young person may not be realising their potential in terms of education, career opportunities, social skills etc and enhance their ability to obtain maximum benefit from school.
- To encourage the development of self worth, self confidence, self respect, discipline snf positive attitudes towards school and society.
- To improve behaviour and school attendance.
- To assist with communication skills
- To assist situation management and self control skills
- To reduce the possibility of school exclusion
It is aimed at young people who are:
- At risk of permanent exclusion.
- Frequently on report for poor behaviour
- Regularly absent
- Displaying poor lesson behaviour
- Demonstrating a poor attitude to teachers, peers and the wider community.
- In trouble with the Police
Many of the young people we work with are presenting challenging behaviour and are beginning to make life choices which hold little hope for them. We work with groups of young people over a period of several weeks and cover topics such as Drugs, Racism, Citizenship, Prison Awareness, Team Work, Community Action and Careers.
"The course is very well devised and structured, and has been developed greatly over the years and, I believe, is second to none in this field. The course is clearly set out and includes a well-produced and clear scheme of work, which enables excellent delivery, and provides a clear and obvious journey for each student."
Andy Eadie, Faculty Leader for Mathematics and Computing at St Ambrose College, Trafford
